“A secret history of how we got into this mess” – that is how Lau Lukkarila and Zeynab Kirikou Gueye describe the thematic scope of their performance Never Underestimate the Calmness on My Face in My Voice. Against the backdrop of today’s morally decrepit society, the two artists use sound and dance to search for sparks of resilience.

At the core of the performance is the motif of the “emotional body,” the notion of a mighty and porous corporeality, beset with the pressure to perform and conform, on the one hand, and pulsating with affective energies, on the other. As Lukkarila and Gueye put it: “We are interested in what it could mean to place the ‘emotional body’ at the center of how we move and play in a collapsing world.”

Never Underestimate the Calmness on My Face in My Voice marks the beginning of a larger project coming on stage in 2024 and is Co-production of not your babe and Kunstraum Niederoesterreich.
