Performance by UÝRA with a discussion between the artist and Vivências afterwards
Curated by Vivências (Marissa Lôbo and Denise Palmieri)
What can we learn from ants, about the diversity of life, and the history of indigenous peoples in the world?
This performance by the artist UÝRA addresses and intersects two biological phenomena and two socio-cultural phenomena in Brazil. The entire performance takes place by placing organic leaves on the ground in the shape of two spirals. A first spiral is assembled, using leaves from green to dry brown (in gradient), with the scenic deposition of an essence - a gesture that evokes the communication of ants. The essence runs out, generating the spiral of death (a phenomenon of interruption of smell and memories among insects, and among indigenous peoples in diaspora in Brazil). In an invitation to the feedback of the forest, another spiral is opened, using the same leaves, as if renewing the cycle. The new twist refers to the exchanges and technologies of memory ensured by indigenous peoples through centuries of historical erasure in Brazil.
UÝRA is in Vienna as artist in residence 2023, hosted by kulturen in bewegung and studio das weisse haus.
